God, family, country, and community are more real than my inner desires. The modern self prioritizes feelings over external claims. Traditional selves adopt religious beliefs based on truth and importance, while modern selves adopt beliefs that align with self-perception. Thus, modern religious beliefs are thin and easily discarded.
