However, they are not causal in themselves. An example of this is elevated triglycerides, which are a risk factor and predictive of adverse cardio and metabolic outcomes. They are also related to fatty liver and insulin resistance. Therefore, elevated triglycerides are significant in evaluating metabolic risk but are not a direct cause.
