The surprise origins of Casio can be traced back to a competition that led one of the Casio brothers to envision building electromechanical calculators, inspired by a contest-winning model. This decision was made despite the fact that at the time the company's biggest selling product was a finger ring with a cigarette holder. However, the lack of industrial base in Japan posed a challenge to the realization of this vision.
Keeping track of numbers has always been part of what makes us human. So at some point along the way, we created a tool to help us keep count, and then we gave that tool a name. We called it: a calculator. But depending on what era you were born in, and maybe even what country, what constituted a 'calculator' varied widely.
