Generations of Basket Making and the Sacred Black Ash Tree
Richard's family has a long history of basket making in Maine. They used black ash trees to create potato baskets, a tradition passed down through generations. Richard learned the art from his mother and began weaving at a young age. The family would make and sell dozens of baskets each week. Black ash trees are considered sacred and important to the Wabanaki people and other indigenous groups in North America. Richard feels a spiritual connection to the trees and believes it is his responsibility to take care of mother earth.
