Productivity in Knowledge Work vs. Industrial Sector
The implicit definition of productivity in the knowledge sector shifted with the rise of the knowledge economy in the 20th century. In industrial and agriculture sectors, productivity was quantitatively measured based on clear production systems, such as the number of Model T produced per labor hour in industrial sector and bushels of corn per acre in agriculture sector. However, in knowledge work, the focus shifted to visible activity as a proxy for productive effort, leading to the misconception that being visibly busy equated to being productive. This shift from a clear quantitative model to a more subjective and heuristic approach has led to challenges in assessing and improving productivity in the knowledge sector.
