The anti-consumerist stance requires a full personality shift, making it costly. Capitalism is often viewed through a moralistic lens, either in favor or in opposition. The conspicuous consumption and desires in consumer culture are often met with disdain or praise, making it hard to grasp the phenomenon objectively. The world's strong emphasis on consumerism represents a distinctive feature of modern society, highly valued despite the prevalent disapproval. Humans have always had desires for material possessions, but the abundance of choices and the ability to invest time and energy into acquiring them distinguish today's consumer culture.
