The Impact of Labels and Praise on Performance

Labels of intelligence and identity undermine performance. Whether received before or after a task or exam, high performer labels have a detrimental effect. Conversely, effort-based praise improves performance. Praising someone for their persistence, ability to overcome challenges, and hard work before a challenge enhances their performance. Similarly, praising effort after an exam or performance sets the individual up for more effort in future endeavors. The timing of praise is not important; what matters is giving genuine effort-based praise. Effort is something that can be controlled, and it is the only thing that truly matters in terms of performance.
