The Paradox of Sexual Appeal and Diminished Pleasure
Pressures to conform to societal standards of sexual appeal lead to compromising experiences of sexual pleasure for women. Surgeries aimed at enhancing sexual attractiveness actually reduce sexual sensitivity and pleasure, such as vaginal plastic surgery and breast augmentation. These surgeries can also increase rates of clinical depression. Viewing oneself as a sex object decreases pleasure during sexual activities due to higher levels of body monitoring. This phenomenon reveals a disconnect between societal standards of sexual attractiveness and actual sexual pleasure for women, raising ethical questions about the driving forces behind these standards, such as capitalist incentives in industries like diet, beauty, and fitness.
