Target Heart Rate for Heart Failure Management
In managing heart failure, heart rate serves as a crucial therapeutic target. Research indicates that patients with left ventricular dysfunction exhibiting a resting heart rate over 70 beats per minute face heightened risks of cardiovascular mortality and hospitalizations compared to those with a rate below 70. While beta blockers offer various benefits beyond simply lowering heart rate, achieving a lower heart rate correlates with improved outcomes in heart failure patients. Consequently, adjunctive treatments may be necessary for those requiring further heart rate reduction, particularly when the patient is already on optimal or maximum tolerated beta blocker dosages due to side effects.
