Venture capital investment is expected to settle around $150 to $180 billion in the next few years, representing a significant correction from the current $300 billion. The venture capital asset class has become institutionalized over the last decade, with a shift towards private investments driven by the dominance of index investing in public markets and the decrease in the number of publicly traded companies. This institutionalization has led to a greater focus on mid to late stage companies, as the only way for institutional investors to access early to mid stage companies is through private investments.
