Criticism and free speech are more fragile in democracies than people realize. In America, getting kicked off social media platforms can limit speech, and it's reminiscent of the 1950s. Other democracies have had similar issues, such as the UK's treatment of the IRA and France's silencing of Algerians during the Algerian War. A healthy democracy should welcome criticism, but many seem scared of it. China is more sensitive to criticism than Russia, but they also have grievances due to past imperialistic actions.
