NOTE

Neural Networks Learning Their Own Algorithms on Recurrent Networks (1992)

In 1992, neural networks began learning to run their own learning algorithms on recurrent networks. These networks had special output units that could address connections within the system and read and write them. This enabled arbitrary learning algorithms and improved learning on the network itself. However, the initial weight matrix was still learned through gradient descent. Compute speed was slow at that time.
