Jesus' Self-Exaltation in the Book of John

In the book of John, Jesus uses 'I Am' statements to set himself apart from all others who have walked the earth. When he declares 'I am the bread of life,' he emphasizes that partaking of him leads to everlasting satisfaction unlike anything else. By asserting 'before Abraham was, I am,' he claims a divine identity, leading people to pick up stones in anger. When he proclaims 'I am the light of the world,' he signifies the arrival of spiritual illumination. In chapter 10, declaring 'I'm the door', Jesus signifies himself as the entryway to salvation.
