The focus should not be on the plaque received for generosity, but on the genuine orchestration of giving without expecting recognition. The true essence lies in being intensely interested in how generosity is orchestrated, done so in a seemingly disorganized manner without a strategy to gain honor. Some have twisted this concept to gain honor through anonymous giving, but this can lead to a new form of honor-shame dynamic. Jesus' ethical wisdom emphasizes the importance of genuine generosity and helping others without seeking recognition.
Sermon on the Mount E18 – In Matthew 6, Jesus turns his attention to religious practices of his day, specifically generosity to the poor, prayer, and fasting. But Jesus gives a surprising warning about these practices: if you do religious practices to get praise from people, then you're missing the point. In this episode, Jon and Tim discuss these three religious practices and reflect on the pitfalls of making religious devotion about yourself.
