OpenAI approached Khan Academy six months ago to test their next generation model, GPT-4. They wanted to collaborate with Khan Academy because they wanted GPT-4 to be excellent in terms of knowledge. OpenAI planned to benchmark GPT-4 using items from Khan Academy's collection. Another reason for the collaboration was that OpenAI wanted to launch GPT-4 with a few organizations that could demonstrate a positive social use case. Initially, Khan Academy had doubts about the effectiveness of GPT-4. However, when they were shown a demo of GPT-4 in early August, they were impressed. GPT-4 was able to answer an AP bio question and explain the reasoning behind the answer. This was three months before the launch of chat GPT, and Khan Academy realized that GPT-4 had tremendous potential. They believed that GPT-4 could help fulfill their vision of providing tutoring and teaching assistance to every learner and teacher worldwide.
