Why did OpenAI become a For Profit organization?
In 2019, OpenAI formed a for-profit wing due to the realization that massive scale was crucial for success, and the amount of resources required exceeded what could be raised as a nonprofit. OpenAI considered alternative funding sources, including the government, but found none. To preserve the nonprofit approach, OpenAI implemented safety features and incentives such as a profit cap and the ability for the board to wipe out equity value if necessary. These measures were implemented to ensure fairness and prevent the concentration of wealth resulting from the development of AGI.
