Ketamine's Impact on Fighting Depression Revealed in Preclinical Model

Lack of sleep, anticipation of a positive future, and ability to imagine the future are key features of major depressive episodes. A preclinical model of learned helplessness revealed that animals injected with low dosages of ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic and NMDA receptor blocker, were able to swim for a longer period of time. This was surprising to researchers, as ketamine's properties as a blocker contradicted the observed effect in the animals.
