NOTE

Epidemiology and Causes of Hypercalcemia in Inpatient Setting

Hypercalcemia is a common condition often without symptoms, caught incidentally through blood tests in inpatient settings. In these settings, hypercalcemia malignancy is the primary cause, potentially due to PTHRP production, bone metastases, or lymphoma-related activation of vitamin D. Primary hyperparathyroidism is considered for ambulatory patients, while for patients with malignancy, PTHRP modulation is common in breast cancer and squamous cell cancers, while multiple myeloma causes hypercalcemia due to increased bone turnover from lytic lesions.
