In order to have an effective and functioning democracy, it's important to believe that positive change is possible. By changing the incentives within certain systems, outcomes can be changed. Performance has its role, but it's crucial to focus on diagnosis, strategy, nuance, and not throwing people away. While there will be evil individuals, most people are trying to live in a better world. In a polarized society, it's important to argue vociferously and honestly, diagnose problems, and go after them strategically, but not to discard potential allies because they are not perfect.
