The Value of Sacrifice and Hard Work: Advice for Young People

In a recent lecture at MIT, I was asked for advice to young people. My answer was to find one thing you're passionate about in your 20s and work harder at it than anything else. Sacrifice and work your ass off. However, I believe this advice is best applied in engineering disciplines, particularly programming. In these fields, putting in the hours and grinding can lead to great work. As for work-life balance, I think it's something that successful people learn later in life, but it's best learned the hard way. I admire those who give everything they have towards achieving excellence in a thing.
