Affirmative action decision: Court rules against Harvard and UNC

The Supreme Court ruled by a six to three vote that the affirmative action programs of Harvard and the University of North Carolina violate the Equal Protection Clause./nThe Court rejected the notion that educational diversity is a compelling interest, overturning previous cases./nTo justify racial classifications, the Court stated that there must be proof of remedying past discrimination or avoiding a future emergency./nEducational diversity no longer qualifies as a compelling interest under the Equal Protection Clause.
