The final years of Ashurbanipal's reign are shrouded in mystery. We have no record of how he died or what he did in his last decade. There is a lament inscribed by him, showing vulnerability and suffering. He questions why he has been plagued by sickness and misery, unable to solve the problems in his country and family. Ashurbanipal's days are filled with woe, as death approaches. He pleads to God for relief, regardless of his impiousness.
