The common theme that runs through all six major stories in First Nephi is exercising faith that God will help in uncomfortable situations, and maintaining a covenant relationship with God. This is evident in the challenges faced by the characters, such as leaving Jerusalem, obtaining the plates, convincing Ishmael's family to come, dealing with the broken bow, building the ship, and crossing the ocean. The characters' reliance on divine assistance and their commitment to keeping their covenants are highlighted as key factors in successfully overcoming these challenges. Additionally, the contrast is drawn between the faithful, covenant-keeping individuals and those who struggle with maintaining their faith, such as Laman and Lemuel.
