In developmental conversations, creating a climate of safety is vital. This can be achieved by using contrasting statements to alleviate fears and anxieties at the start of the conversation. By assuring the individual that they are not in trouble and that the purpose is to help them improve, a sense of safety is established. Coaching becomes effective when the individual feels cared for, making them more receptive to feedback and guidance. Conversely, when disciplining is necessary, the focus shifts to ensuring the individual understands what they did wrong, what to do differently next time, and the consequences of not doing so.
In this episode, Craig tackles three more things that matter when you are leading up: motives, initiative, and truth.
