Positive Opposite Behaviors: Specific Praise for Desired Behaviors, positive feedback
To effectively reinforce desired behaviors, it's important to be specific with praise. Instead of generic compliments, highlight the specific behavior exhibited. For instance, if a child perseveres through a challenging problem, praise their effort. Combine verbal praise with nonverbal reinforcers like a high five. Give feedback immediately after the behavior occurs, and provide it consistently to counterbalance any previous frustrations. Focus on increasing positive opposite behaviors, such as quickly and calmly transitioning from activities. Praise good listening skills or staying calm when told no. Tailor your praise to your child's specific behaviors.
