Growing Up on a Dairy Farm and Farmland Ownership in the US

Growing up on a real dairy farm in northeastern Pennsylvania imparted the value of hard work and the optionality that comes with owning land. Despite the profitability of natural gas over dairy farming, the value of land ownership has remained significant. Farmland ownership in the US is not as consolidated as perceived, with around 40-45% owned by active farmers and the majority owned by heirs, estates, and trusts. Institutional ownership is low, and foreign landownership is minimal. Farmland rental market is robust, particularly in the Midwest, due to the continuous farming on all available land.
