*Large Language Models: Sentient or Not? *

Large language models based on static architecture cannot achieve self-awareness or consciousness. These models lack malleable memory and do not have the ability to update their model of themselves or the world around them. To be considered alive, an entity must be able to have an ongoing updated model of itself and its environment. Large language models, such as GPT3, do not possess these qualities and therefore cannot become self-aware. Other AI models in the field may have the potential for self-awareness through maintaining and updating learning models, interacting with the world, and having incentives and multiple actions. However, architecturally, large language models are incapable of achieving self-awareness. They serve as powerful tools in natural language processing tasks but fall short of being sentient entities.
