Structuring Your Perceptions (part one)

The Jordan B. Peterson Podcast

NOTE

You Don't See Objects, You See Things You Could Trip Over

In our perception, we don't see objects, but rather places we could fall off of, obstacles, and tools. Babies instinctively understand this, as they avoid crawling over a glass over a cliff. Our brain's positive emotion response is triggered when we see an open pathway towards a valued goal. The more valued the goal, the stronger the positive emotion. Open pathways and valued goals are important for happiness. This is why drugs like cocaine or caffeine are addictive, as they activate the same system as perceiving a clear pathway to a goal.
