Exploring Metabolic Adaptation and Starvation Mode in Dieting
When dieting, the body down-regulates nonessential processes to conserve energy, which is an evolutionary strategy to enhance survival. The Minnesota starvation experiment showed that a significant portion of reduced energy expenditure during dieting is due to the loss of body weight. Additionally, hormonal downregulation and adaptations contribute to a smaller portion of the reduction in energy expenditure. In cases where individuals, especially small women, experience a weight loss plateau while dieting, it is often due to their body's metabolic adaptations that reduce the deficit created by dietary changes and decrease energy expenditure through reduced physical activity, leading to a slower rate of weight loss.
