Hidden Forces

NOTE

The Impact of the Great Depression on American Society

The Great Depression led to unprecedented levels of unemployment and poor living conditions for a significant portion of the American population. People resorted to makeshift shelters due to their inability to afford decent housing. The economic downturn also led to irrationality within the system, with farmers finding it more difficult to transport their livestock to market than to sell them due to the meager returns they were getting. This widespread suffering and inefficiency led to a loss of faith in capitalism, creating a need for government intervention to regulate and humanize the economic system. While the New Dealers were not socialist, they recognized the necessity of a powerful federal state to establish a welfare system and regulate capitalism for the benefit of the public.
