NOTE

Safety of Mineral Sunscreens vs Chemical Sunscreens

The structural similarity between oxybenzone and bisphenol A raises concerns regarding the safety of chemical sunscreens, prompting a reevaluation of their long-standing status as safe. The FDA's 2021 order reflected these concerns by shifting the classification of certain chemicals in sunscreens from recognized safe and effective to those that require further scrutiny. Evidence of these chemicals being present in breast milk, amniotic fluid, blood plasma, and urine adds to the uncertainty surrounding their safety. Particularly for infants under six months whose skin is more absorbent, the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend avoiding chemical sunscreens. In contrast, mineral-based sunscreens, containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, lack such concerning data and are regarded as safe over the last several decades. Therefore, when choosing between chemical and mineral sunscreens, mineral options are advocated due to their physical barrier properties and absence of troubling evidence.
