Attentional and Orienting Systems in Learning

The art attentional and orienting systems work together in a complementary way. If there is a mismatch in ongoing processing, the orienting system is activated, resulting in a burst of non-specific arousal and a search for a better matching category. Familiar categories lead to a quick reset and a shift in attention, while novel categories require a brief search. When there is nothing nearby, the system chooses an uncommitted population to learn a new category.
