The Incompatibility of Politics and Evidence in Decision-Making
Google organizes weekend meetings where people try to solve world problems, but if these issues could be solved so quickly, they weren't really solved. The idea of a virtual country with a one-line constitution is intriguing, based on evidence. However, politics cannot be solely based on evidence since it requires making decisions without complete information. The irrationality of humans and other factors influence political decisions. For instance, capital punishment policy should ideally be based on deterrence of crime, but the decision to have such a policy may need to be made before gathering evidence. This demonstrates that politics often operates in advance of evidence.
