NOTE

The Cruelty of Obesity: the Body's Defense Against Weight Loss

The body's defense against weight loss is governed by the hypothalamus which measures the circulating hormone leptin levels corresponding to body mass. The hypothalamus has a set point for the desired fat level in the body and triggers responses to restore fat to this level if it deviates. This system is more effective at preventing weight loss than weight gain, leading to weight regain after loss. In obesity, the set point for defended body weight increases, causing the body to resist weight loss vigorously, mimicking a starvation response. This defense mechanism increases hunger, food focus, cravings, decreases energy expenditure, and works against maintaining weight loss. Weight loss is challenging and temporary due to the body's strong defense mechanisms, especially when not adequately supported.
