Tech's Role in Society Misunderstood and Overlooked

The importance of explaining and engaging in the regulation of technological tools such as software was underestimated in the past. Silicon Valley is to blame for not adequately addressing the significance of their products and the need for regulation. Initially, there was a prevailing belief that tech startups and tech itself were unequivocally beneficial for society without recognizing their political implications. The positive narrative around tech shifted post-2015 as the negative impacts, like social media's involvement in democracy, became more apparent. Prior to that, even during the 2012 elections and the Arab Spring, tech was hailed as a force for good, showcasing a lack of understanding regarding its societal repercussions.
