Being a CEO involves not only being the head of HR and recruiting talent, but also managing a team. The key to success lies in understanding that the company is in the people business, not the database or software business. All the issues faced by the company are ultimately tied to people, as I emphasized to my team and everyone in the company. During a recent leadership team offsite, I reviewed successful projects and struggling products, and found that the root cause of both was the lack of a directly responsible individual (DRI) with the necessary skills and experience to lead. In some cases, shared accountability and unclear DRIs led to failure, as Jeff Bezos famously said, 'If you want something to fail, make it their part-time job.' Hence, having the right people in the right roles is crucial to everything.
