The inability to completely suppress ideas is a positive aspect of human civilization, emphasizing the flaw in believing that censorship can eliminate human evil. The First Amendment supports allowing even abhorrent opinions to be expressed to prevent them from being driven underground and exacerbating group polarization. Research shows that censorship does not change minds, rather people tend to seek out like-minded individuals, leading to increased polarization.
