Opinion polls in South Africa reveal a grim outlook with record lows in optimism for the future and satisfaction with democracy. Despite increased social integration, the belief in improved race relations has decreased since 2010. Surprisingly, a large portion of citizens would sacrifice elections for job security and housing under an autocratic leader. The disillusionment with democracy seems rooted in economic grievances, as the past 15 years have seen economic stagnation and a halt in material improvements experienced during the first democratic era. The initial 15 years post-democratic transition were marked by significant growth, social welfare advancements, and declining unemployment rates.
