Dr. Lisa Feldman Barrett: How to Understand Emotions

Huberman Lab

NOTE

The Limitations of Language in Understanding Emotions. More emotion words the better.

Language alone is not sufficient to understand emotions. Different cultures have unique words and concepts for emotions that are not easily translatable. For example, German has a word for the experience of someone who deserves a punch, and Polynesian has a word for exuberant aggression in a group. Having these words allows for a deeper understanding of emotions beyond what English can provide. So, language should not be relied upon solely to understand how we feel.
