Íconos e índices

Conventionalized icons and symbols are commonly used to represent things. A conventionalized icon communicates by its similarity to something else, based on shared form, like the smiley face made with colons and parentheses. Icons and perception work by recognizing things that share form to represent something else. Indices represent things by their connection to them in some form, for example, a cough communicates something about the speaker's state because it's physically associated with it. The smell of smoke communicates something by its correlation to something burning.
