The internet contributes to the formation of like-minded groups facilitating connections and support, but also enables negative group formations such as white nationalists and polarized politics. It acts as an efficient attention-absorbing machine, reducing in-person socializing significantly over the past 20 years. There is a decline in various social activities, like youth sports and religious attendance, possibly due to increased entertainment and comfort at home. Notably, the percentage of Americans attending houses of worship regularly has dropped substantially over the years, aligning with young people reporting having fewer friends and reduced social interactions. The internet has exacerbated this anti-social trend, intensifying the decline in social interactions and physical gatherings.
