Timed tests provide critical information on students' mastery of key skills and concepts. Accuracy alone cannot capture additional learning beyond 100% accuracy. Rate based metrics, advocated by Matt Burns and Amanda Vander Heiden, are more reliable indicators of students' instructional levels. Fluency skills, like in reading or sports, are crucial for performance. Timed tests are necessary and supported by data showing that rate based metrics correlate stronger with high achievement tests and are more efficient, saving instructional time.
