Handling Conflict Right with Amanda Ripley

We Can Do Hard Things

NOTE

Understanding Understories Simplifies Conflict

Identifying the underlying themes, or 'understories', in conflicts can lead to more productive conversations. The four core understories are care and concern, respect and recognition, power and control, and stress and overwhelm. By recognizing these themes, individuals can navigate disagreements with greater understanding. For instance, conflicts may ultimately stem from emotions like fatigue or concern for a partner's well-being, rather than the surface issue being debated, such as the need for a handyman. This perspective encourages a focus on connection and collaboration rather than continuing endless arguments.
