Formation of Igneous Rocks from Volcanic Activity

Igneous rocks are formed either from volcanic activity on the surface of the earth or deep beneath the surface. When magma from the mantle moves upwards, it can create volcanic igneous rocks, while magma that cools beneath the surface forms plutonic igneous rocks with large crystals over millions of years. The distinction between lava and magma is based on whether the molten rock is on the earth's surface or still underground. Granite countertops are examples of plutonic igneous rocks, while floors are often made of volcanic igneous rocks.
