The Fundamentals of Machine Learning
Machine learning models are statistical prediction models that are trained using data. They model the statistics of the world and the data they are trained on. The concept of modeling has existed for centuries, with the recognition that we cannot predict everything with absolute certainty. The simplest model used in the past was fitting a linear model to data points. This model allows for making predictions with some uncertainty. Uncertainty is important because it acknowledges that there is an inherent lack of complete knowledge, but it represents the best guess with an associated error bar. This concept of modeling and prediction with uncertainty forms the foundation of machine learning.
