Moving Towards Decarbonization: Proposals for RTO and Market Development

Know Power

NOTE

Rob Gramlich predictions for 2050

The energy market in the West is likely to have regional markets, with a more evolved southeastern market. Transmission infrastructure will be developed through a variety of approaches, including RTO-led initiatives and utility partnerships with independent companies. Expansion of the grid is expected between Eastern and Western interconnections to enable large-scale energy movements. There could be an increase in transmission capacity for moving significant amounts of energy between regions, as suggested by NREL modeling, potentially facilitating movements of 40 gigawatts daily. Additionally, there may be new transmission lines established to facilitate energy exchange both to and from Texas.
