People with opioid use disorder in recovery described experiencing a shift in their relationship with opioids, from craving to simply wanting to remember or do it. They were able to pause and make decisions, recognizing the negative consequences and eventually reevaluating habitual actions. Veterans in the study also exhibited a striking ability to question the necessity of habitual actions like drinking coffee, indicating a broader pattern of reevaluation and establishment of new behavioral patterns.
