The Destructive Role of Emotional Contagion and Mass Psychology on Social Media
Emotion is highly contagious and social media is a vector of emotional contagion, as evidenced by research. Studies have shown that reading distressed posts on social media can lower one's mood. This phenomenon aligns with Jung's distrust of mass psychology, as he believed that individuals get swept along on an emotional current, leading to a lowering of consciousness. Jung's observations were influenced by his experience during World War I and World War II, which led him to be extremely distrustful of mass psychology and its destructive nature.
