Debate on Recruitment Maneuvers in Critical Care Management
Recruitment maneuvers in critical care management have been debated due to potential risks and lack of clear benefits in clinical outcomes. The ART trial attempted recruitment maneuvers but faced hemodynamic compromise, leading to abandonment midway. Higher mortality in the trial was not solely attributed to recruitment maneuvers as analyzed post-trial. Arguments for lower pressure, shorter duration recruitment maneuvers have been made, but guidelines still do not strongly recommend them. While acute recruitment maneuvers may improve oxygenation in hypoxic patients, the implementation in practice remains cautious due to the uncertain benefits and associated risks.
