Hidden Forces

NOTE

Impact of Communism on American Capitalism

During the Cold War, the fear of communism compelled American elites to support social welfare measures and make compromises to avert the perceived threat of communism abroad and in the United States. This led to a compression of wage gaps between the rich and the poor, with CEO salaries being 20 times higher than average worker salaries in 1960, reducing to 300 to 1 by 2000 after the Cold War. The disappearance of the communist threat coincided with a significant increase in economic inequality in American society, as elites were no longer compelled to make compromises in the absence of the perceived communist menace.
